The fields that need to develop new disciplines in relation to system information are becoming increasingly diversified, resulting in a steadily expanding base. Such a state, needless to say, necessitates the establishment of an academic structure related to systems, information, and computation, which serve as the core of system informatics, in the form of a single graduate school. In addition to such an academic structure, the enrichment of education and research specific to each field is essential to rapid advancement of education and research in interdisciplinary areas. Nevertheless, to cover all education and research specific to each field in a single graduate school of a single university is unrealistic, requiring the construction of a new education framework.
Our concept is to incorporate collaboration with other universities and other research institutes within a graduate school framework. That is, we have jointly constructed an education system in collaboration with other university graduate schools that have a proven education and research record in each area and field related to system informatics. Specifically, within our Graduate School of System Informatics, we have formed a framework that provides cooperative programs with Kyoto University, Osaka University, Nara Institute of Science and Technology, Tsukuba University, and Nagoya University, making it possible to utilize the education resources of each university in an integrated manner.
In particular, in order to respond to the extensity of each area and field in the years to come and foster the human resources of universities across the nation, we have constructed a flexible collaborative education system that is capable of supporting the expansion of participating universities by providing an education program consisting of short-term intensive training utilizing next generation supercomputers. Our Department of Computer Science and Systems Engineering in the Graduate School of Engineering of Kobe University has a proven record of collaborative education with other universities in its “Advanced IT Specialist Program” and “Inter-University Computational Science Advanced Human Resource Program,” and we will utilize this experience to continually enhance the design of this collaborative education program.
